In-cabin air and off-gassing
A parked car in Singapore sun becomes a sealed chamber of heated plastic and trapped moisture.
A car cabin is roughly three cubic metres of air shared by everyone inside, with the largest ratio of plastic, adhesive and synthetic trim to air volume of any space you occupy. Park it in the sun and those materials warm to well above ambient temperature, which accelerates the off-gassing of volatile compounds — the smell most people call 'new car'. Add the evaporator, the damp carpet under the mats and food residue between the seats, and you have the same mould conditions as an aircon, in a far smaller space.
What common practice looks like
- A quick vacuum and a dashboard shine spray, which adds solvent and fragrance to a sealed cabin.
- Driving off immediately in a sun-baked car instead of purging the hot, off-gassed air first.
- Cabin filters left in for years while they load with road dust and hold moisture.
- Spills and crumbs left to soak into carpet foam under the mats, where humidity keeps them damp.
- Air fresheners and 'bomb' fumigants used to cover odour that is coming from the evaporator and carpet.
How it reaches the body over years
- Heat-driven off-gassing from plastics and adhesives raises volatile compound levels in a very small air volume, and is linked to headaches, drowsiness and throat irritation on drives.
- A damp evaporator and carpet can push musty, spore-laden air through the vents at every start.
- Recirculation mode concentrates whatever is already inside, including exhaust drawn in during traffic.
- Children in rear seats sit closest to the carpet and rear vents, and breathe more air per kilogram of body weight.
- For anyone who commutes daily, this is one to two hours of exposure, every day, for years.
What correct care changes
- Extraction of carpet and upholstery to remove the damp, food-soiled base layer rather than mask it.
- Steam treatment of hard trim and contact points — wheel, shifter, handles, belts — without heavy solvent.
